The night was noteworthy for its absentees. Neither the leader nor the second placed rider in the current track league were present. For the first time for years there was not a single Atom Elite R T rider on the programme. This should have been an opportunity for the rider in third place, Martin Smith - Nottingham RC, to bridge the ten point gap to second place. Having gained half this target he fell in the early stages of the Keirin. The fall at first looked a fairly gentle one, no one else came down. However according to the Red Cross representatives on hand he could have sustained a fractured humerus [ not the funny kind ] and the ambulance took him away for further investigation / treatment.
The real beneficiary on the night was Ben Elliott now resplendent in his new VC St. Raphael kit. Ben rode well to win 5 races on his own and to share the win in the 12 lap Madison Pursuit with the unfortunate Martin Smith. The 25 points gained on the night enabled Ben to leapfrog Martin into third place and puts him only 2 ½ points behind second place Jonathan Nunan - Atom Elite RT.
The numbers were swelled by a large number of riders from Blackburn & District CTC. In many of the races the final laps seemed to fought out between 3 or 4 Blackburn riders and Ben Elliot. The results show that Ben usually won out.
We all wish Martin a speedy recovery and look forward to next week. This will be the last night in the current first league in 2000 and it looks almost certain that Alwyn McMath will win but IF Jonathan Nunan could repeat the score of Ben Elliott this week and Alwyn did not come - well his 22 point lead would be inadequate. But IF is something else.

REPORT ON MEETING HELD TUESDAY 29th February 00
The second race of the evening saw Alwyn McMath [ Atom Elite RT ]
establish the pattern for a scintillating and for him successful nights racing. This win was followed by wins in the Derny Pursuit, the Group 2 Devil and the final event of the evening the 40 lap Scratch Race. The 14 points he collected has put him firmly at the top of the current league 6 points clear of the previous leader Martin Smith [ Nottingham RC ]
.
The derny's were out again and the Keirin gave one of the closest finishes and bravest rides of the night. Dominic Hill [BCF Private Member ] had the lead at the bell and being under tremendous pressure he just held on to win by half a wheel.
In the 30 lap Points race a group of 5 got away from the pack and with 6 laps to go Ian Armstrong, one of that group, came down but was unhurt and walked away. Alex Critcher [ Atom Elite ] was first across the line but the overall result went to Steve Stoneman [ Cost Car Imports ] with 11 points from Will Wright [Atom Elite ] with 10 points.
The points race for group 1 riders, the win went to Ian Taylor [ Stonefield Cycles ] with 8 points, the next three riders all had 6 points and Sally Boyden [ Clarkes Contracts ] was unfortunately placed fourth on count back..
The Derny paced pursuit saw the two riders at the top of the league go head to head and it proved to be an intriguing and evenly balanced contest until the last two laps when either Martin Smith tired or Alwyn had been keeping something back for the final kilometre. The gaps were; @ 1km 0.502 seconds, @ 2km 0.195 seconds.
There were fallers again in event 10 the group 2 Course des Primes. Fortunately no one was seriously hurt and Marshall Thomas [Atom Elite ] was able to ride again later. Stephen Goodwin [ Mercury RT ] was not quite so fortunate. He had a very sore shoulder and a front wheel that looked like it had been made by Salvador Dali.
These incidents did not mar a super evenings racing for riders and spectators alike.

REPORT ON MEETING HELD TUESDAY 15TH February 00
The first meeting of the new millennium at the velodrome in Manchester saw a full programme closely contested by a nucleus of regular riders and some new faces. Almost all the riders achieved some success, only seven failed to score some league points.
The first race ,the 20 lap scratch race, was taken by Martin Smith [ Nottingham RC ] in a close finish from Steve Stoneman riding for an www. site called Cost Car Imports. Martin went on to score wins in the 30 lap points race along with the Devil run for riders with even numbers.
Steve won the next race the 2 up flying time trial, paired with Paul Barber [Scunthorpe Poly] in a very respectable time of 31.967 seconds.
The Devil for riders with odd numbers went to Will Wright [ Atom Elite ]
Will also won the amazing unknown distance race. Normally the first few laps are taken at a casual pace and eventually the bell rings and its eye balls out for the line. Last night Will went quickly from the gun and the bell rang after only three laps leaving him the easy winner.
The Sydney Handicap final was won by a Tuesday regular, Dick Cubeson [ Rutland CC ]. Dick rode both the heat and the final ideally. He finished second in the first heat therefore qualified for the best starting position and at the gun went away like a train leaving the others looking at one another deciding who would lead the chase and by the time they got round to it Dick was well away and won comfortably.
The final event of the evening, the 40 lap scratch race was marred by a crash just after Will Wright [ Atom Elite ] had taken the half distance sprint. With 18 laps to go the field seemed to bunch just going into the bend at the end of the home straight and Martin Coles [ Wrekinsport RT ] came down, Francis Newstead [ AC Slumberland ] fell over him and landed heavily sustaining a broken collar bone. The track needed some attention and the officials decided to end racing for the night. It is understood Francis is making a good recovery and looking forward to going away to training camp.
