09 16th Mar 2004 prem09points.pdf prem09results.pdf prem09week.pdf The nights racing was as eventful as ever with a marked improvement in the quality of music played. Highlights were Alwyn again winning his "Devil" after packing in the points race whilst on 13 points and having a commanding. James Notley went on to win this race with a score of only 12 points. Hugh Cameron of Manchester Wheelers was one of the first riders when the velodrome opened ten years ago in October and tonight he showed the value of experience and pacing to take second place behind Matt Haynes in the 50 lap scratch race for even numbered riders.
Haynes had a very good night riding four events and winning all of them in addition to taking the half distance sprint points in the 50 lap scratch race. Alwyn Mc Math still leads the league with 97 points and Matt Haynes is second with 19 points less. He pulled back 5 points on the night but with only 2 more weeks racing it looks like another league for Alwyn.
08 9th Mar 2004 prem08points.pdf prem08results.pdf prem08week.pdf A healthy number of riders and an interesting evenings racing, the field split into odd and even numbers as for most of this league.
Alwyn Mc Math consolidated his position as league leader with a haul of 16 points on the night. This figure was beaten by Matt Haynes who got one more and is now in fifth place.
The most comment worthy event occurred in event 7 the 50 lap scratch race for odd numbered riders. The group of Will Sanderson, James Davis & Adam Blyth went away and Phil West dropped back from the main field to assist them in taking a lap. For this he was disqualified and left the race. Of the three, two almost immediately lost the lap no doubt tired by the exertion leaving James Davis in the middle of the pack as race leader. He took both the race and the half distance points. At the end Alwyn Mc Math made a great effort to take the race not having noted that the sprint was only for second place

A really good nights racing, once again a large number of riders necessitating the field to be split into odd & even numbered groups for the first six events.
Alwyn Mc Math collected 15 points and is obviously not going t surrender his title without a fight. He won the first race 40 lap scratch and the 50 lap scratch for non Madison riders, between times he of course won the odd numbered devil. He has only failed on one occasion this year and that was the night he did not ride.

There was an on going battle between Malcolm Elliott and Ed Clancy in the even numbered group. Elliott took the verdict in the first 40 lap even numbered scratch by half a tyre width. Revenge to Clancy in the Points race which he won by a two point margin. Clancy did not quite match his super haul of points of last week [ 18 points ] but with 13 on the night still heads the league table with 61 from Mc Math who has 40

In the seventh race, the 50 lap scratch a group of seven led by Malcolm Elliott went away and lapped the field. Lapped riders were asked to leave the track with 5 laps to go. They are to be congratulated on the alacrity with which they did so. Would that they show the same when called out of the Devil. As stated Mc Math just squeezed home ahead of Elliott

The Madison was fairly uneventful apart from one passing on the inside of a changing pair. Track experience was put to good use by Phil West during his winning ride partnered by Adam Blythe from Sheffield Phoenix, they collected 14 points and won by 3 points from the pair of Ed Clancy and Matt Brammeier.

01 20th Jan 2004 prem01points.pdf prem01results.pdf prem01week.pdf You will be delighted I am sure to see a resumption in the " Jottings " after my absence for the end of last year, hors de combat, as they say.
The number of entries, a record for the first week back, meant that races were split into odds and evens. Great to see so many good riders. They gave the spectators some very close racing.
The first race, a 40 lap scratch race was won by James Davies who went away with 9 laps to go and held on to win from a revitalised Phil West.
In the even numbered points race the race was enlivened by Ian Cummings & Ian Stott gaining a lap and the extra 10 points, This gave the win to Cummings and third place to Stott.
Alwyn Mc Math again won his Devil, showing the value of an old head.
The two 10 mile races resulted in close racing the odd going to Phil West and the even to Steve Cummings. The times of the two races differed by 0.4 of a second.
The leader on points after the first night is Kristian House with 16 points 3 more than Steve Cummings.
