Directions For Manchester Velodrome for Cyclists

Manchester Velodrome – ‘A’ road directions for the cyclist (where possible avoiding heavy-traffic dual carriageways). Most, if not all, major ‘A’ routes into Manchester now display signs (brown background with white lettering) for SportCity – which includes the City of Manchester Stadium, National Squash Centre, the National Tennis Centre and (of course) the National Cycling Centre which is close to the junction of A6010 Alan Turing Way and A662 Ashton New Road.

From Central Manchester (Piccadilly Gardens)
From Piccadilly proceed along Lever Street for 0.5 mile and turn right at traffic signals onto A665 Great Ancoats Street. Continue along Great Ancoats Street for 0.75 mile and after canal bridge turn left at traffic signals onto Pollard Street becoming Merrill Street and then Ashton New Road (A662) for 1.25 miles, turning left (ASDA Walmart opposite) at traffic signals onto Alan Turing Way. Proceed for 0.25 mile and turn right onto Gibbon Street (by McDonalds) and 2nd left onto Stuart Street via traffic Island.

Alternatively! - from Central Manchester (Piccadilly Gardens), there is a route (requiring very little road riding) from Manchester Piccadilly to the Velodrome using the Manchester and Ashton-under-Lyne Canal. Near to Piccadilly Gardens, at the junction of Ducie St and Jutland St, take the towpath along right fork of the canal away from the city centre that will bring the user along side the Velodrome at the Stuart Street bridge. (NB the left fork will take the user towards Newton Heath and Failsworth)

From the South West (Knutsford)
Follow directions for Manchester via A556 - Chester Road (passing near to Manchester United Football Club) becoming Deansgate. At the beginning of Deansgate turn right following signs for (and after) Piccadilly Gardens as above.

From the South (Wilmslow)
Follow directions along the A34 and continue through Wilmslow town centre (now an unclassified road), through Handforth and Heald Green (now on the B5358) before rejoining the A34 at ‘Cheadle Royal’. Continue along the A34 becoming ‘Kingsway’ to its end. Take the second exit off traffic island (NOT under the railway bridge) and proceed along Slade Lane to the junction with the A6 (Stockport Road) to the junction with traffic signals on Kirkmanshulme Lane and turn right, becoming Pottery Lane and Allan Turing Way.

From the West (Warrington) - A57
Proceed along the A57 and follow directions through Eccles for Manchester into Salford. Take directions for Piccadilly Gardens and follow signs for SportCity.

From the East (Hyde) – A57
Proceed west along the A57 and continue in the same direction (over the M60) on dual carriageway (Hyde Road). Continue for 2.6 miles and turn right at traffic signals into Pottery Lane becoming Alan Turing Way. Proceed for approx 1.25 miles and turn right at traffic signals into Gibbon Street (by McDonalds) and next left into Stuart Street via traffic island.

From the North East (Oldham)
Proceed south west along the A62 (Oldham Road) following signs for SportCity and turn left at traffic signals at junction with Hulme Hall Lane. Proceed past Philips Park Fire station (on Briscoe Lane) and turn left immediately beyond the canal bridge into Gibbon Street (by McDonalds) and left into Stuart Street via traffic island.

From the North (Bury) – A56
From Bury proceed south along A56 (Bury New Road) to the junction with A665 (Bury Old Road) in Whitefield and bear left crossing the M60 after approx ½ mile. Proceed along Bury Old Road – becoming Cheetham Hill Road to the junction with A6010 (Queens Road) and turn left. Proceed along Queens Road and continue onto Hulme Hall Lane as above.
